Glad to see the board is up and running. The route looks good.
Just a question, the Roswell to Santa Monica route is a day longer than I figured it would be. Are there plenty of stops to explore being planned along the way to fill the time that we will be doing as a group? Or are you just planning for us all to have a lot of free time each day to explore on our own?
I'm just curious because we have to be home (Hoquiam, WA) but Saturday night preferred, or Sunday morning in order to unpack and recuperate for work on Monday. It would be nice to have an extra day to return home.

Not sure Judy, the Route 66 portion was Jerry's thing. Maybe it is because he feels we will be getting kind of warn out by then? I did pre-run the Williams to Needles part on Thanksgiving. There is at least two great places to stop and goof around, I spent a couple of hours in each one. I'll post some pictures soon. There was lots of "open" road time too. I am going to run the LA portion in the next couple of months along Foothill Blvd. This area is in a pretty populaed area and I feel it will take some time to negotiate the traffic and stop lights.
I've never been on a stretch out of road without lots of wonders to explore.
It just seemed curious to me that we would be doing the 1400 miles of the eastern leg in 4 days but doing the western 1200 miles in 5 days. It just doesn't make much sense to me. Especially since the more congested traffic will be in the East and, thus, slow us down more, won't it?
Do you know when more details will be available for both sections of the trip?
I'll talk a little with Jerry about this. I think he is much more familiar with the Eastern part than the Western. Another thing is that one of the days will be July 4th and it would be nice to be able to see fire works, I think in Needles. We are trying to get more planning done in the next couple of months and start firming up the routes. I am in contact with the Motel 6 guys trying to get a confirmation on lower, special rates and that might alter the route a little. Then we can post Hotel information for nearly every stop. I think we will have the option of staying in Motel 6s 11, maybe 12 times. Certainly we will need to tie up the one in Roswell soon as the UFO Festival takes up quite some rooms I have heard. There are 83 rooms in the Roswell Motel 6 and I would like to take them all. I am trying to get David to make it the host hotel, but he will not return any messages so I am going for it with or without him.
Hey Judy,
I just counted the days and it is 4 days for each Ropute 66 legs. Leave Roswell on July 2nd and arrive in Santa Monica on July 5th for the West leg. If we drive from Santa Monica pier to my area near Solvang, CA on the 5th then we could have a party at my house on July 6th (the 5th day). I think that means only 4 days of travel and one day of Party! That would still leave you two days to get back to WA from the Solvang area (pretty achievable as we have done it to Seatle several times in two days - my daughter owns a house there) or three days if you take off dirrectly from Santa Monica.
I may be coming up that way in August '07 to do the Canadien VW show in Vancouver (if my car is still up to it).
You're right...I read the number of days wrong. I hope you're planning the party at your house for early in the day. It would be nice to get together for a brunch-type of thing or, at the latest, a lunch to say goodbye to everybody. But we will definitely want to hit the road that day. We would like to be home by Saturday night so we have Sunday to unpack, go through the mail, yada yada before heading back to work on Monday.
We've actually done the LA-Hoquiam run in one very long day before. But I know I won't have the oomph for that after all the driving we'll be doing on this trip. I'm thinking we'll stop for the night in Yreka.
I agree that going with the Motel 6 in Roswell now is a good idea. If we're there at the same time as the UFO Festival, rooms might already be getting scarce. Just let us know when we can make our reservations to get the group discount! Glad to see that the Motel 6 plans along the route seem to be coming together, too. Good job!
The PNWNBC went to the Canadian show a few years back. It's a good one so you should have a great time. Maybe some of us will join up with ya? I'll ask around when it gets closer. Do you know what weekend it's on this year?
Thanks for the info! Judy & Bilbo
No Judy they have not made a plan yet, just some time in August.
I think it will be a day time affair. Lunch and goodbyes seem in order. I am in hopes that several of the SoCal gang will attend. Great friends = great fun!!! It is about 8 - 9 hours from here to Yreka.
